Prime Minister Keir Starmer

In an interview with the Bloomberg News this afternoon following Israel’s overnight strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has set out his “grave concerns” about Iran’s nuclear programme and reasserted his support for Israel’s right to self-defence against the Iranian threat.

“It’s obvious that for a long time we’ve had grave concerns about the nuclear programme that Iran is putting together”, he said.

“We absolutely recognise Israel’s right to self-defence”, the Prime Minister added.

He went on to “urge all sides to de-escalate and negotiate”, revealing he has spoken to President Macron and Chancellor Merz, who “are all on the same page” with regard to the threat posed by Iran’s nuclear programme and a collective call for de-escalation.
