LFI stands with the vast majority of the Israeli people who want to end the war and free the hostages, who Hamas have held in appalling conditions for nearly 700 days.
Hamas’ murderous assault on southern Israel on 7 October triggered a conflict which has brought about terrible suffering for innocent Israelis and Palestinians alike.
We reiterate our longstanding calls for a ceasefire and believe urgent action – including a surge in aid – must be undertaken by Israel and the international community to address the desperate humanitarian situation in Gaza.
We share our government’s desire to bring a long-term end to the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians and we therefore strongly support a negotiated two-state solution. This is the only means to guarantee Israel’s security, preserve its precious identity as a Jewish and democratic state, and satisfy the legitimate demand of the Palestinian people for self-determination and national sovereignty.
However, recognition of a Palestinian state outside of a meaningful peace process will change nothing on the ground nor move us closer to a two-state solution. We urge the government to ensure that its decision this month supports the vital goals of the full and unconditional release of the hostages and ensuring that Hamas is disarmed and can play no future role in the governance of a Palestinian state.
